Working with ToonDoo
A ToonDoo strip will look something like the sample shown below. In ToonDoo, you start by creating different strips, and then you later combine the strips into a ToonBook. A ToonBook allows a user to flip through the strips like they are turning pages in a book.
Step One: Login to ToonDoo and create a new account if necessary. Click Toons < Create Toon to get started, and choose your preferred comic strip layout. IMPORTANT: In order to create a ToonBook with multiple strips, a horizontal layout is required as depicted above.
Step Two: ToonDoo is relatively easy to use, but to get started, explore the template libraries at the top of the project window. The three most used template libraries are characters, backgrounds, and props. Select the background library, pick any background, and drag it to your first window. The background can be moved around and resized to fit. Click the "enlarge" and "shrink" buttons on the bottom options menu to alter the chosen background.
Step Three: Select the character library, and drag a character to your first window. Characters may appear to be fixed, but you can actually alter their appearance from window to window. With you character selected, click the "emotion" and/or "posture" buttons on the bottom options menu. Each click of these buttons will show a different appearance for any selected character. Another useful option is the "Flip" button which allows you to further alter the appearance of a character or prop in a window (e.g., character looks right in one window, and looks left in the next window). Play around with your character to see the different appearances possible.
Step Four: To add part of a script to a window, highlight the texts library from the top menu. Choose a text bubble option and drag it your window. Note, the "Pro" bubble is the easiest to use and alter to fit within a defined space. Type your text and use the options menu at the bottom to make any changes to font size or color.
Options of Note: If you ever want to delete a text box or any item in a window, click to highlight it, and click "Delete" on the bottom options menu. If you want to move one object in front of or behind another, click "to front" and "to back" on the bottom options menu.
Copying a Window: If you're happy with the look of a given window, and you want to copy all of the elements to the next window (backgrounds, characters, props, and text), click the tab at the top right of a given window to copy it over. Try to avoid too many windows with the same elements, or your strip will become monotonous.
Step Five: After you have created your first ToonDoo strip, you will need to save the strip. Roll your mouse over the ToonDoo logo in the upper left-hand corner, and click "Save." From this same menu you can click "New" and begin working on the second strip in your presentation. Create as many strips as necessary to complete your presentation.
Step Six: After completing all of your strips, from the main ToonDoo home page, roll your mouse over the link for "Books" and click "Create Book." The book maker will display thumbnails of all your strips. Drag the strips one at a time into the book window to begin constructing your multi-strip book. Starting with your second strip, the book maker will prompt you as to where you want to insert the strip... before or after the current strip. When you have finished constructing your book, click "Publish" and enter a Title and Description to save the book. Click View it Now to view you book.
Step Seven: On the View it Now page, grab the embed source code for your published book. Or, you can click Go to Page to see the actual link to your book with the embed code options. Copy your embed code, then go to your Weebly portfolio and insert an HTML block where you would like your ToonDoo to display. Paste the embed code in the block to insert your ToonDoo strip on Weebly.
